Chattanooga Lady Red Wolves leading defender Maggie Shaw made headlines this week in the world of women’s soccer. Shaw has signed a professional contract for the Newcastle United Jets in Australia and will play for the upcoming 23/24 season in the A-League. Shaw is now the third Lady Red Wolves player in 2 years to become a professional.
Maggie, originally from Columbia, South Carolina, played the past three seasons with the Chattanooga Lady Red Wolves. Maggie was a big factor to the Lady Red Wolves back line. In the 2022 season, she made the National Team of the Year Second-Team for the United Soccer League W.
When asked about the successful career of Maggie Shaw, Lady Red Wolves assistant coach Katie Phillips said, “She is an exciting player to watch and has been pivotal in our defense over the last three years.” Katie also added, “She is a talented player, and we are excited that another Lady Red Wolves player has taken their game to the next level and signed a professional contract overseas. We are very proud of Maggie and wish her all the best in Australia.”
Shaw graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2022 after a successful career as a defender with the Mocs. Maggie earned many awards during her time with the Mocs including Southern Conference (SoCon) All-Freshman Team, All-Tournament Team, and Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. Maggie was also team captain during her sophomore and junior year. In her final season with the Mocs, Maggie was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and made All-Conference First Team.
Maggie will join the Newcastle United Jets, a team founded in 2008, for their 23/24 season. The Jets play their home games at Newcastle International Sports Centre and at No. 2 Sportsground. The season will run from November to April which includes a regular season and a playoff tournament run to decide who will be crowned champions.
